About the Show

The Hearth and a tour of your first hour

The show opens with a welcome and then a song that demonstrates a particular poetic form/style/ genre or an actual famous poem.

I’ll  read 2-3 poems on a theme–the season, weather, current event, or ideological concept. These could be my own or a well-known poet’s, mostly American with some international. From the theme poems, I’ll choose a poet to focus on and read more of their work. There will be a brief craft talk, an explanation of why the poems work, then I’ll invite callers to share their opinions about those poems.

Musical interlude –  chosen for their relation to the poems.

For the last 20 minutes, I will offer a poetry prompt, and read poems sent in from the previous week.

And now for your Second Breakfast

Hey y’all!  WCOM’s resident poet and host of The Hearth Poetry Hour, Emily Shearer, is spinning in her deejay’s chair with excitement to announce to you her second hour on the Friday morning airwaves with a new program: Second Breakfast. She and visiting co-host Dylan Ducatte will serve up a rotating selection of radio snacks to get you through your Friday morning. The shows will entertain, educate and enlighten you by covering a range of topics from news summaries to book reviews, women’s issues and even modern-day witchcraft, all interspersed with a daily menu of fresh folk music finds from the last two decades.

Do you like the music of Iron & Wine, Hiss Golden Messenger, Waxahatchie, I’m With Her, Mipso, Watchhouse and more? Maybe you need books to add to your reading list? Curious about moon spells and kitchen witchery? Or are you a GenZ-er looking for help understanding what’s happening in the world from someone who gets you? Second Breakfast has it all! All you need is a morning beverage and a listening ear.

The Hearth Poetry Hour and Second Breakfast, 10 am-12 pm Fridays on WCOM

    • “Good Question”* – a news segment where college correspondent Dylan Ducatte answers pertinent questions about recent world news
    • “We Ride at Dawn” – discussion, articles, shares and stories about women’s issues, health tips, food/nutrition, mothering/parenting, the coven, yoga and spirituality
    • “Book It” – a recap of monthly book reviews
    • “Hold On Radio” – fresh folk music finds of the last two decades

Second Breakfast and its co-hosts, Emily Shearer and Dylan Ducatte believe that engaging topics, rousing music, relatable news stories and friendly, familiar voices will keep you, our listeners, tuning your radio dials (or computer speakers) on Friday mornings for a versatile, virtual sit-down snack– slightly unpredictable, always wise and witty, and just satisfying enough to get you through til lunchtime.
