WCOM Weekly Dose Of … had the great fortune to have Matt Bissonette join our show this past Friday 11/29/24, and what a time we had. Matt is an accomplished bassist who is currently touring with Sir Elton John and has been part of Eltons band since 2012.
Matt’s musical journey is a fascinating story and is full of well-known names in the music business. Matt studied music in college, specifically jazz. Prior to his playing bass he was trumpeter for the Maynard Ferguson’s band. In the late 1980’s Matt joined with David Lee Roth band, replacing Billy Sheehan. Our hour was short and there is only so much we could learn in such a short time, but we did learn some amazing snippets from his journey. His circumstance for joining Elton John’s band was shared and albeit brief, he spared us the tragic details of the loss of a dear friend, who he ultimately replaced. As Matt tells the tale, playing with Elton is like being part of a special family.
Some other artists Matt has played with include Joe Satriani, Ringo Starr (and the stories he shares of simply chatting with Ringo are well worth the listen), Jeff Lynne of ELO, Boz Scaggs, and Rick Springfield, and Matt has collaborated with the likes of Brian Wilson, Don Henley, Sheena Easton, Joe Perry, Gino Vannelli, and Julian Lennon. Matt has nearly 30 or so records in his discography, and we enjoyed a number of Matt’s tracks as background during our conversation. It was truly a pleasure to hear a small slice of his story for the hour we share on the Carrboro airwaves.
