Our night with jazz great
Bunny Brunel
Another great night of conversation and music with our special guest Mr. Bunny Brunel, brought to WCOM and Weekly Dose Of … by our good friend F. Scott Moyer and the Legends of the Groove Signature Cymbal.
Bunny is best known in the jazz community for his melodic, groove-oriented music and recordings. He has collaborated, performed, and continues to record with some of the most recognized names on this globe. Some of the industry giants have included Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and more. He is considered a musician’s musician. During our hour on the air with Bunny, we learned when he started playing music in France, his home country, and how his journey brought him to the United States. From 1967 – 1978 Bunny honed his craft performing with French greats as a studio musician. The word of Bunny’s brilliance was heard by other jazz giants, and in 1978 he was invited to LA to work with Chick Corea. During his years with Chick, Bunny toured and played across the globe, and brought his style of fusion bass jazz to places it had not previously been heard. We learned he toured more than 50 cities throughout Japan, and in many cities across Europe, and Africa.
During our conversation we learned Brunel is celebrated as a fusion giant and one of the founding fathers of the jazz bass fusion movement. Bunny is revered as a pioneer in fretless bass playing and is considered unmatched in his technical prowess and melodic approach, which has set him apart as a visionary musician. His stories are endless and fascinating. He is still performing and recording great music and his most recent project “Bass Ball 2” is a perfect introduction to his style of play. In addition to his musical gifts, Bunny is an Editor at Large for Virtuoso Bass magazine. His passion is to recognize and pay tribute to the “top players” in the world of bass guitars! Other side projects include designing his signature bass for ESP Guitars, as well as teaching and lessons to new artists. One thing he shared which may surprise some of you, he spent 10 years teaching the bass to the son of Clint Eastwood, Kyle. Kyle is now an accomplished musician in his own right and has played with Bunny live. The gift of seeing Kyle excel clearly brought joy to Bunny. Bunny’s passion comes across the air-waves.
