How is underwriting different from advertising?
Underwriting announcements are factual and understated, and seek to inform listeners about a service rather than induce them to purchase a product.
Why become an underwriter?
- Underwriting is the best way for businesses to promote themselves while supporting non-commercial radio stations.
- Because there is no commercial clutter, your message will always stand out.
- The cost of underwriting can be deducted as a business marketing or promotional expense
- You choose — either support the entire station and receive daily announcements across programs, or select a specific show(s) that reach your desired audience.

How is underwriting different from advertising?
Underwriting is a way to market your business and support non-commercial, public radio stations. Underwriting announcements are factual and understated, and seek to inform listeners about a service rather than induce them to purchase a product. The cost of underwriting can be deducted either as a business expense. It is not a charitable donation.
How can underwriting help my business?
You can support the entire station or, with WCOM’s eclectic fare, you can select the show or shows to support that reach the demographic you want – homeowners, artists, youth, Latinos. Because there is no commercial clutter, your message will always stand out. Your announcements will be heard and remembered by the show’s listeners, who support those businesses supporting their favorite show.
What are my underwriting options?
WCOM is seeking underwriters for each locally-produced show as well as station underwriting.
Single show underwriting is available for one announcement on that show each week at the rate of $250 per year.
A variety of “station” underwriting options are available, including the WCOM“Golden Voices” and “Angel” levels.
For $500 per year, WCOM’s GoldenVoices receive one announcement per day. Also, the supporter’s logo is prominently featured on WCOM’s website.
For $1000 per year, WCOM’s Angel Voices receive two announcements per day. Also, the supporter’s logo is prominently featured on WCOM’s website.
What if a show I underwrite goes off the air? The announcement will be transferred to a show with a similar audience for the remainder of the contract period.
