We have a new voice on the WCOM airwaves, and he’s bringing five decades of country music with him.
Joe Don Baker, “Walking Tall in Country Music,” is the host of our newest show, Classic Country Saturday Night, airing Saturdays from 8 to 10pm. He’s already soft launched, and his official first show is Saturday, May 9.
Classic Country Saturday Night is a two hour weekly journey through the genre’s deepest catalog. Expect a lineup heavy on the 70s and 80s, plenty of 60s and 90s, and the occasional dip into the 40s, 50s, and early 2000s. Joe Don is preserving the legacies of Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame artists alongside the core songs and familiar fan favorites that defined the format.
Each hour features the “Classic Country Notebook,” a segment built around interview clips from a deep bank of guest artists, both archival and current. Listen for recurring features like the “Trucker’s Jukebox” and “Classic Country Saturday Night Gets Religion.” Studio quality image liners from legends including Bill Anderson, Crystal Gayle, Charlie Daniels, Willie Nelson, and Marty Stuart give the show its unmistakable feel.
If you grew up on this music, or if you’re just curious what country sounded like before the radio got crowded, tune in Saturdays at 8pm on WCOM 103.5 FM. Welcome aboard, Joe Don.
