In 1983 I began publishing about roots music. I have emceed and stage managed at dozens of music festivals &. During 1985 I helped create the International Bluegrass Music Association. Late that year I became its first executive director. I returned to IBMA’s Board of Directors for two terms running from 1998 through 2004. I six years as president of the board of the Old-Time Herald. I currently serve on the board of directors of the Folk Alliance International.

In 1990 the Folk Alliance elected me its first President. In April 1991 I became its first manager, serving until June 1996. After a period as an agent, I became Associate Festival Coordinator for MerleFest, the enormous outdoor folk festival in Wilkesboro, NC. Following a decade there, I served as Director of Appalshop, the acclaimed Appalachian media and arts center in Whitesburg, KY.
In April 2012 I returned home – finally – as Executive Director of The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, NC , then semi-retired into arts and non-profit consulting
