The Buzz

The Buzz with Christine BushTM (The BuzzTM) seeks to meet WCOM’s mission “to educate, inspire, and entertain” by showcasing innovative new and experimental music, musicians, and the stories behind them.

During The BuzzTM, best experienced with headphones or ear buds, one will typically hear music and sounds that are less than six months old. #FreshBuzz spotlights music released in the last month. #LocalBuzz spotlights local experimental music or music with a North Carolina connection. #GlobalBuzz spotlights new world music. The mix is primarily curated from labels committed to giving musicians creative autonomy, and from independent musicians sharing or selling music online using emergent distribution channels. These alternatives to large corporate music services represent what Christine identifies as #TheSoundtrackOfNow, the leading edge of musical innovation rather than sales or streaming metrics.

The BuzzTM seeks to redefine expectations of what one might hear on the radio. “New music doesn’t always come from new artists, but new music always involves innovation,” Christine Bush explains. For this reason, #CollectiveBuzz (a crowdfunded musical project) starts the hour each week. The result is a sonic canvas, or soundscape, that combines ambient, world music, electronica, contemporary ensembles, jazz, and jazz fusion. The BuzzTM is committed to programming equivalence for music by women.

Christine Bush brings broad knowledge of music and media to the radio, but also her unique perspectives and voice as a GenX transgender woman. Her experiences include having been a violist with the Raleigh Symphony and a mandola player with The San Francisco Mandolin Orchestra (including one performance with David Grisman). Her radio credentials include having been an announcer, news director, and station manager at NC State’s WKNC-FM; an intern with Triangle-area radio celebrity Kitty Kinnin during her tenure as host of The Jazz Brunch on WRDU 106.1 FM; on air talent at WTRG Oldies 100.7 FM and WRDU 106.1 FM The Home of Rock n’ Roll; an announcer and Creative Services Director for WERX 102.5 FM Coastal Carolina’s Rock n’ Roll Authority; and on air talent at Philadelphia’s critically-acclaimed station WXPN 88.5 FM.

During an interval of several decades since her first years on university and commercial radio, she has been a web developer, producer, and engineer and was an early adopter of the Live365 internet radio service in the early 2000s as program director for AMERICAN-FM.ORG. She lived and worked in Silicon Valley for 16 years where she also attended San José State University as a graduate student. She and her spouse returned to North Carolina in 2016. She is currently a writer/editor, cloud and multimedia services consultant, patron of open music initiatives, films, and podcasts, and an avocational musician/arranger/composer. Christine is a principle subject of the award-winning documentary film, The Ties That Bind (Falling Apples Films 2017), written, directed and produced by her sister Diana Newton.
