Black Elk, in the wonderful book Black Elk Speaks states,
“Hear me, not for myself, but for my people. I am old. Hear me that they may once more go back into the sacred hoop and find the good red road, the shielding tree!"
The dream is still valid today. As stated by David Ipinia, a Yurok artist, “Being Indian is mainly in your heart. It's a way of walking with the earth instead of upon it. A lot of the history books talk about us Indians in the past tense, but we don't plan on going anywhere….." Native Americans have moved beyond traditional music and have developed distinct rock, blues, and folk styles, as well as popular pan-tribal styles like waila (chicken scratch). The Red Road Show showcases the Native American musical expression of life.
